CARPINUS BETULUS: Produces a dense mass of bright green leaves turning an attractive russety-brown in Autumn - many lasting well into the Winter in sheltered areas. A superb, and very dense clipped deciduous hedge. Ideal for external boundaries in exposed and windy areas. PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS: Soak the rootball before planting. Plant in a hole twice the diameter of the rootball or pot. Mix an acid organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil. Water regularly until established. CARE: Fully hardy and very tough. Best as a taller. Tightly clipped hedge. Trim in early Summer and again in Autumn to maintain a dense, well shaped hedge. SUITABLE FOR: A sunny or semi-shaded position in any fertile, well-drained soil. EASY TO GROW: Native to Europe and perfectly suited to UK growing conditions, Carpinus betulus is a hardy and low-maintenance species. It tolerates full sun or partial shade, adapts to clay, chalk, or loamy soils, and stands up well to wind, cold, and urban pollution. A brilliant choice for both rural gardens and city landscapes. ELEGANT FOLIAGE THROUGH SEASONS: This deciduous tree brings visual interest all year round — fresh green leaves in spring and summer, turning a warm golden yellow in autumn, and revealing a handsome smooth grey bark through winter. Even when not in leaf, Hornbeam maintains its structure and beauty, lending architectural depth to any garden landscape. FORMAL HEDGING: Few plants shape as beautifully as Hornbeam. Its strong framework and fine-textured leaves respond well to clipping, making it perfect for neat, formal hedges or elegant standalone trees. When left to mature, it forms a graceful, rounded crown — ideal for avenues, driveways, and larger garden settings.
