The majority of this quilt is made with heavyweight 100% organic cotton, handwoven in a carbon neutral mill that is run on solar power. The organic cotton has been hand dyed with cutch (acacia catechu) a natural dye that can produce shades of earthy pink. Other shades of pink and red in the quilt come from madder root and quebracho on linen and hemp blend fabrics. The pattern on the front is a play on the flying geese quilt motif. The quilt is an XL throw size (approx 58” x 68”). The front and back were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, were entirely done by hand with cutch dyed cotton sashiko thread. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine. The binding is a mix of fabrics and is sewn by hand.
