The Marines who fought into Hue in 1968 had trained for jungle and rice paddy, not for a city, and they had to relearn urban combat under fire. It is the most expensive kind of fig hting there is. Every street corner had to be "sliced" one careful step at a time, every window and doorway treated as a firing position, every room cleared by men who could not see what waited inside. The Marines improvised as they went — using tanks and recoilless rifles to blast through walls rather than exposing themselves in the streets, blowing "mouseholes" from building to building. Progress was measured in yards and paid for in blood. K&C sculpts the pair working a corner: one Marine easing around it with his M16 up, the other close behind covering the angle, both in flak jackets, jungle utilities, and camouflaged M1 helmets.
