The story of the 604 Desk, designed by architect Mario Gottardi, intersects with that of the great ocean liners of the twentieth century and begins with the discovery of several sketches dating back to 1954, created for a project intended for the captain’s cabin of the motor vessel Leonardo da Vinci. However, we must wait until 1956 to see its first - and perhaps only - realization, when the Writing Desk model 604, as it was originally called, was commissioned for the offices of the Mazzi company in Verona. The new executive 604 Desk pays tribute to the original by reinterpreting it while preserving its original spirit, seventy years after its first edition. It features a more international and contemporary look, based on a refined balance of solid and empty volumes, squared geometries, and oblique lines. The suspended top, supported by brass spacers, is the distinctive element that gives the executive desk a striking presence, setting it apart from the aesthetics of traditional writing desks. The lines of the 1950s have been updated, as have the materials: while the 1956 version adopted solutions typical of industrial modernism, such as Formica and Resinflex, the new proposal elevates its value through the use of noble materials and fine finishes. The central body is characterized by leather upholstery, framed by solid American walnut perimeter structures, available in different finishes. The suspended top can be made of wood, leather-covered, or wood with a leather desk pad. Brass details, such as the foot rail and the spacers supporting the top, add an extra touch of elegance and refinement. The 604 Desk is part of the Masters Tribute line, a homage to the great designers of the twentieth century, aimed at bringing back to light design pieces that would otherwise be forgotten.
