Incentive Create ceramic pendants with patterns using air dry modelling clay -Line-Shape-Space-Colour-Texture-Form Supplies Air drying modelling clay (we use DAS as it’s very easy for young hands to manipulate) Rolling pin (plastic preferably) Wooden or plastic board (or a board covered in plastic wrap) Water in a small container Plastic food wrap Acrylic paint Paintbrush or foam sponge brush Sponge is optional for smoothing of clay if children don’t want to use fingers Plastic or paper straw Mini cookie cutters in a variety of shapes Objects that make small patterns – graters, skewers, buttons, lace, stamps etc Light sandpaper String, leather, or ribbon (for hanging pendant) Clear lacquer (optional) Lesson 1 Knead the clay in hands to soften and get rid of any air bubbles. 2 Using a rolling pin and a board (or a board covered in plastic wrap), roll out a slab to about 4-5mm thickness. 3 Select cookie cutter that has the shape you wish to make and press it into the clay. Remove excess clay and use a damp sponge or wet finger to smooth out edges if required. 4 Decide on a patten or design for your pendant and find appropriate object to press into clay to produce the design required. The design can be as detailed as the child’s creativity and fine motor skills extend. 5 Use the end of a straw to press a hole through the top of the pendant. Ensure hole is not too close to the edge as it may snap off. 6 Leave aside to dry for up to 48 hours, depending on weather and thickness of pendant) 7 If necessary, lightly and carefully sandpaper any rough edges or the back of pendant. 8 Paint as desired and when dried finish with a layer of matt or glossy lacquer. 9 Attach string, long leather strap, or ribbon through the hole. 10 This could be placed in a gift box and given as a gift on special occasions.
