Cercestis mirabilisCercestis mirabilis begins with dark green arrow-shaped leaves crossed by bold silver-white markings. Pale colour gathers along the midrib and spreads outward in irregular feathered sections, while the lightly textured blade retains a deep green border. These juvenile leaves travel along a climbing stem that produces adhesive roots against its support.Continued climbing eventually transforms the foliage. Later blades become much larger, lose the silver pattern and divide into plain green segments, bearing little resemblance to the compact marked leaves below. Long exploratory shoots help the vine reach another support before leafy growth resumes. A developed plant can therefore show its life history along one stem: small patterned juvenile foliage near the base, increasing blade size through the middle and deeply divided green adult leaves higher up.
