Ceruloplasmin is the primary copper-carrying protein in the blood, responsible for transporting approximately 95% of the body's circulating copper. It plays essential roles in copp er and iron metabolism, antioxidant defense, and the regulation of iron transport through its ferroxidase activity. Low ceruloplasmin levels are the hallmark finding in Wilson's disease — a genetic condition that causes dangerous copper accumulation in the liver, brain, and other organs.
