Approximately 10x9x7 It seems like an oxymoron that something so dark could also be this brilliant, which is partially why we fell in love with this specimen when we first saw it. It almost looks like crystallized black velvet. The dichotomy here makes this one of the coolest specimens we have. This geode is full of clusters of black botryoidal chalcedony dotted with contrasting calcite crystals. The rounded, bubble-like formations are created as layers of microscopic quartz crystals slowly build upon one another, resulting in the grape-like texture known as botryoidal growth. Chalcedony itself is a microcrystalline variety of quartz that forms in cavities and fractures within rock, often creating some truly bizarre shapes along the way. Here, the dark chalcedony provides the perfect backdrop for chunky, pale calcite crystals that decided to hang out within. Is this geode the mineralogical equivalent of a goth kid or a tiny representation of the night sky filled with stars? That’s really up to you to decide.
