Botanical Name: Anthemis nobilis Botany and Origins: Chamomile Roman is a pleasant smelling perennial with feathery fern-like leaves and branched stems of a creeping habit with daisy-like flowers. It is a native of Western Europe and is now cultivated in England, Belgium, France, Itay and Hungary. Its common name is derived from the Greek word chamaimelon - chamai meaning on the ground, and melon an apple, referring to its distinctive smell when fresh. The botanical name of Anthemis is derived from the Greek word anthos which means a flower. The plant's specific name of nobilis means noble or noted - referring to its healing virtues. Method of Extraction: Chamomile Roman is distilled from the flowering tops. Cultivation: Conventional Historical and Traditional Uses: Chamomile Roman has long been known for its therapeutic properties. Decoctions of the whole herb have been taken or applied throughout Europe for the relief of complaints such as wind and pains and torments of the belly. It was indicated that chamomile tea is an old fashioned but extremely effective remedy for hysterical and nervous afflictions in women, and is also used as an emmenagogue. Chamomile flowers are recommended as a tonic in dropsical complaints for their diuretic and tonic properties. The flowers may be used in a poultice and fomentation for external swelling, inflammatory pain or congested neuralgia. It is also recommended that the oil to be used as a stimulant of leucocytosis and for anyone with a low resistance and repeated susceptibility to infection. According to traditional herbalists, the emotional state of anger is associated with the choleric humour and the liver. Hence, chamomile's ability to soothe restlessness, nervous irritability or impatience is associated with its action on the liver. Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Chamomile Roman has been identified as having sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. It was found that the oil from the white headed variety was significantly more sedative than the oil from the yellow headed variety. The white headed variety contained significantly more angelic esters and this may have contributed to the increased sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. While Chamomile Roman shares similar properties with Chamomile German, its chemical profile is very different. Chamomile Roman essential oil contain very little (if any) chamazulene or alpha-bisabolol - the major constituents responsible for Chamomile German's anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties. Indications: Children's Remedy: Chamomile Roman is considered one of the gentlest of essential oils and is particularly beneficial for treating children.
