Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir is a 750ml, 12% ABV sparkling wine from Domaine Chandon in California's Carneros appellation, made entirely from red grape varieties via Méthode Traditionnelle. Awarded 92 points by both Wine Spectator and Vinous, this bottling stands out for its night-harvested fruit and richly textured palate that bridges the gap between Blanc de Blancs elegance and rosé weight.Quick Facts: ABV: 12% | Origin: Carneros, California | Style: Blanc de Noirs, NV | Producer: Domaine ChandonProduction & HeritageDomaine Chandon was established in 1973 as Moët Hennessy's first American sparkling wine venture, making it one of the earliest French-backed operations in Napa and Carneros. The Blanc de Pinot Noir is built from a blend of approximately 84% Pinot Noir and 16% Meunier, both red-skinned varieties, yet the wine emerges pale and golden thanks to careful whole-cluster pressing and night harvesting — grapes are picked in darkness to preserve freshness, limit phenolic extraction, and reduce oxidation. Secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle following Méthode Traditionnelle, the same process used in Champagne, giving the wine its fine-bead effervescence and yeasty complexity.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with fresh figs and ripe stone fruit before giving way to warm nutmeg and a subtle brioche quality. There is a quiet floral lift underneath that hints at the Meunier component.Taste: The entry is smooth and round, immediately registering nectarine and wild strawberry. At mid-palate, red currant and elderberry add depth, while toasted almond and spiced-nut accents build toward a creamy, layered peak. Acidity is moderate but well-integrated, keeping the wine bright despite its generous body.Finish: Medium-to-long, with fine-grained bubbles carrying lingering hazelnut and doughy notes. A quiet raspberry echo and touch of spice hold on as the mousse fades. How to Drink Chandon Blanc de Pinot NoirServe well chilled — around 45°F — in a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the aromatics while giving the mousse room to express itself. Neat is the primary recommendation, as the wine's texture and complexity reward undiluted attention. For cocktails, try a French 75, where the stone-fruit character complements gin and lemon beautifully; a Bellini, substituting this for Prosecco to add body and berry depth to peach purée; or a Kir Royale, where even a small measure of crème de cassis amplifies the wine's existing red-fruit backbone.Best For Hosting a sparkling wine tasting focused on Blanc de Noirs expressions Gifting someone who enjoys Champagne but wants to explore California alternatives Pairing at a charcuterie-and-cheese dinner party Celebrating milestones where a crowd-pleasing, critically acclaimed bottle is needed Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir taste like? It delivers rich stone fruit and wild strawberry up front, layered with toasted almond, red currant, and brioche notes from bottle fermentation. The texture is creamy and round, with moderate acidity keeping the palate lively. How does Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir compare to Domaine Carneros Brut? Both are Méthode Traditionnelle California sparklers from Carneros sourced by French parent houses — Moët Hennessy for Chandon, Taittinger for Domaine Carneros. Chandon's Blanc de Pinot Noir tends toward richer body and red-fruit character because it uses exclusively red grape varieties, while Domaine Carneros Brut blends Chardonnay for a leaner, more citrus-driven profile. Is Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir good for sipping neat? Yes — its 92-point Wine Spectator score reflects a wine with enough complexity, fine mousse, and layered fruit to stand on its own without any additions.Where is Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir made? It is produced by Domaine Chandon in the Carneros appellation, a cool-climate region that straddles Napa and Sonoma counties in California. The estate was founded in 1973 as part of the Moët Hennessy portfolio. What foods pair well with Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir? Smoked salmon or trout, where the wine's acidity cuts through richness; triple-cream brie, which mirrors its creamy texture; duck rillettes, complementing the red-fruit notes; prosciutto-wrapped melon, playing off the strawberry and nectarine character; and almond-crusted chicken, echoing the toasted-nut finish. What sizes does Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir come in? It positions as a mid-range California sparkling wine, sitting above supermarket fizz but well below vintage Champagne. With multiple scores at 90 points or above from publications including Wine Spectator, Vinous, and Wine Enthusiast, it delivers strong critical validation for its price tier. Why Chandon Blanc de Pinot Noir?Night harvesting is a deliberate, labor-intensive choice that most sparkling producers skip — Domaine Chandon uses it here specifically to coax a pale, golden wine from deeply pigmented Pinot Noir and Meunier without sacrificing flavor intensity. The result earned 92 points from both Wine Spectator and Vinous and a Gold Medal from the Women's Wine & Spirits Awards, placing it among the top-scoring California Blanc de Noirs on the market. Its blend of roughly 84% Pinot Noir and 16% Meunier — with no Chardonnay in the cuvée — gives it a textural richness and red-fruit generosity uncommon in the category. For anyone seeking a Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling wine that prioritizes body and complexity over austerity, this bottling makes a compelling case.
