In 1943, Newport was attacked by low flying Luftwaffe aircraft which had evaded the Island's radar systems. Aiming to destroy the nearby Morey's yard which was being used to manufa cture aircraft parts, their bombs and cannon fire went astray into nearby Chapel Street, almost completely destroying it and taking twenty lives in the process.
