Chapter 1 of the PIECES Resource Guide introduces the PIECES Foundational Principles and PIECES approach as far more than just a clinical assessment framework. At its core, PIECES is a holistic, relationship focused approach to collaborative engagement, shared clinical assessment and supportive care with the older Person at risk of, or living with, complex conditions. The PIECES Learning and Development Program, driven by the Foundational Principles, is a competency-based Program to develop PIECES Practitioners. The Chapter closes with a description of the PIECES Core Competencies, which will be familiar to health care practitioners, to support the application of the PIECES approach in practice.
