The psychology of power, persuasion and manipulation is a favourite for many students. Don’t get too excited, though – the goal here isn’t to teach you how to manipulate people. On the contrary, you will learn about how your mind and behaviours are vulnerable to manipulation by others, including salespeople, online stores and social media companies. By learning how they use these tricks, you can guard yourself against them. The first half of the chapter focuses on decision-making and is designed to cover the topic of “thinking and learning” in the Learning and Cognition context. You’ll learn more about the ways we take mental shortcuts and how these can be manipulated. We’ll then focus on learning, including social learning, operant conditioning and classical conditioning.
