Chartreuse Green V.E.P. 1L
Chartreuse Green V.E.P. 1L is an exceptionally aged French herbal liqueur bottled at 54% ABV (108 proof) in a 1-liter format. Awarded 98 points by Wine Enthusiast, this hand-number ed, wax-sealed expression represents the pinnacle of the Chartreuse range — a liqueur aged far longer than the standard Green Chartreuse in oak demi-muids, yielding extraordinary depth and complexity.Quick Facts: ABV: 54% | Origin: Isère, France | Exceptionally Prolonged Aging | Distillery: Chartreuse (Aiguenoire)Production & HeritageV.E.P. stands for Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé — "Exceptionally Prolonged Aging" — a designation first introduced in 1963. The liqueur is produced by Carthusian monks at the Aiguenoire distillery in Entre-deux-Guiers, Isère, using the same closely guarded recipe of 130 botanicals that defines all Chartreuse production. What separates the V.E.P. from standard Green Chartreuse is the monks' selection of particular batches for extended maturation in small oak casks called demi-muids, allowing years of additional aging to deepen the herbal profile and soften the spirit's considerable power. Each bottle is individually hand-numbered and sealed with wax, released in strictly limited quantities that make it one of the most sought-after liqueurs in the world.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with intense alpine herbs and fresh pine resin before giving way to layers of peppermint, anise, clove, and basil. A subtle woodsy earthiness from the extended oak aging ties the botanical bouquet together.Taste: The entry is rich and slightly syrupy, with menthol and peppermint leading into a mid-palate surge of alpine herbs, peppery spice, and licorice. As it develops, sage, citrus peel, floral honey, and angelica emerge with remarkable clarity. The 54% ABV provides a firm backbone without overwhelming the botanical intricacy.Finish: Exceptionally long and persistent, with lingering mint, ginger root, and tobacco-like earthiness. The oak influence becomes most apparent here, adding a smooth, warming dimension that separates the V.E.P. from its younger sibling. How to Drink Green V.E.P.This liqueur is best appreciated neat at room temperature or with a single ice cube to gradually open the dense herbal layers; water is unnecessary given the syrupy body. While it excels on its own, the V.E.P. can anchor serious cocktails where standard Green Chartreuse is called for. A Last Word made with V.E.P. gains significantly more herbal depth and a longer finish. A Chartreuse Swizzle showcases the liqueur's mint-forward character against fresh pineapple and lime. A Bijou — equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Green Chartreuse — becomes a far more complex drink when the V.E.P.'s extended aging adds oak-derived smoothness to the mix.Best For Gifting a serious spirits collector who already owns standard Green Chartreuse Anchoring a special tasting flight comparing Chartreuse expressions side by side Celebrating a milestone occasion with a rare, hand-numbered bottle Building a luxury home bar with hard-to-source, limited-production spirits Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Green V.E.P. taste like? Green V.E.P. delivers an intensely herbal profile dominated by peppermint, alpine herbs, anise, and licorice, layered with peppery spice, floral honey, and citrus peel. The extended oak aging adds a smooth, slightly syrupy richness and a distinctly long, warming finish absent from standard Green Chartreuse. How does Green V.E.P. compare to Dolin Génépy Le Chamois? Dolin Génépy Le Chamois is a lighter, lower-proof Alpine herbal liqueur centered primarily on the génépy plant, often considered a more approachable cousin of Chartreuse. Green V.E.P. is dramatically more complex and intense — higher in proof, made from 130 botanicals rather than a single dominant herb, and aged for years in oak, resulting in a depth and persistence that Génépy does not attempt to match. Is Green V.E.P. good for sipping neat? Green V.E.P. is one of the finest herbal liqueurs in the world for neat sipping, thanks to its exceptionally prolonged aging that smooths the 54% ABV and creates layers of flavor that unfold slowly over minutes in the glass.Where is Green V.E.P. made? Green V.E.P. is made by Carthusian monks at the Chartreuse distillery in Aiguenoire, located in Entre-deux-Guiers in the Isère department of southeastern France, near the French Alps. What foods pair well with Green V.E.P.? Dark chocolate with high cacao content complements the liqueur's herbal bitterness and honey-like sweetness. Strong blue cheeses like Roquefort provide a savory counterpoint to the mint and anise. Herb-crusted lamb benefits from the overlapping herbal notes. Fresh goat cheese with honey mirrors the floral and sweet elements. Candied ginger echoes the warm spice on the finish. What sizes does Green V.E.P. come in? Chartreuse Green V.E.P. is available in the standard 1-liter presentation, which is the traditional format for the V.E.P. line.Is Green V.E.P. worth the price? Green V.E.P. positions firmly in the ultra-premium liqueur tier, justified by its limited production, hand-numbered bottles, years of additional oak aging beyond standard Green Chartreuse, and a 98-point rating from Wine Enthusiast — placing it among the highest-rated herbal liqueurs ever reviewed. Why Green V.E.P.?A 98-point score from Wine Enthusiast places Green V.E.P. in rarefied territory — very few liqueurs of any category have earned comparable critical recognition. The distinction begins with the Carthusian monks' decision to set aside specific batches of Green Chartreuse for years of additional maturation in oak demi-muids, a practice dating to 1963 that transforms an already complex 130-botanical liqueur into something measurably deeper and more refined. Limited availability, hand-numbered wax-sealed bottles, and no viable substitute at this level of herbal complexity make it a benchmark expression in the category. For anyone who has appreciated standard Green Chartreuse and wants to understand what time in oak can do to that recipe, the V.E.P. is the definitive answer.
