MichelleProduction & HeritageChateau Ste. Michelle holds the distinction of being Washington State's founding winery and was named Wine Enthusiast's "American Winery of the Year" in 2004 — a recognition that helped put Columbia Valley on the global wine map. The Cabernet Sauvignon is built around an 82% Cabernet Sauvignon base, blended with 6% Syrah, 5% Malbec, and 7% other red varieties for added depth. Ripe grapes are destemmed and inoculated with multiple yeast strains to maximize complexity, then aged for 24 months across a combination of 20% new oak barrels, 46% neutral oak barrels, and 34% stainless steel — a split that preserves fruit expression while layering in measured oak influence. Columbia Valley's dramatic diurnal temperature swings, sometimes reaching 40°F between daytime highs and nighttime lows, allow the fruit to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity and balanced sugar levels.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with ripe blackberry and dark plum, followed by hints of driftwood smokiness and a faint saline quality. Underlying notes of olive and baking spice emerge as the wine breathes.Taste: The entry is smooth and fruit-forward, with red cherry and dark berry flooding the mid-palate. Layers of bittersweet chocolate-covered cherry and strawberry jam develop toward the peak, framed by silky tannins that give the wine structure without harshness. The Syrah and Malbec components add a viscous, almost velvety texture that rounds out the blend.Finish: Medium-long, with lingering dark plum and a thread of baking spice that slowly fades. The tannins remain smooth through the close, leaving a dry but polished impression. How to Drink Chateau Ste. Michelle CabAt its best slightly below room temperature — around 60–65°F — this Cabernet rewards 20 to 30 minutes of breathing time before serving. It drinks well on its own or alongside a meal. Classic Cabernet Smash: The wine's ripe berry character and moderate tannins hold up against muddled blackberries and fresh mint. Red Wine Sangria: Dark fruit intensity and balanced acidity make it a strong base for citrus-forward sangria without tasting thin. Kalimotxo: The smooth, fruit-driven profile pairs surprisingly well with cola in this traditional Basque cocktail, where heavier, more tannic reds can overpower.
