Reissues never go far enough! Instead of simply copying a vintage circuit with modern-day components, our friends at Chelli Amplification subtly improved the classic schematic and used period-appropriate parts to build the "Brown-Out"—a tribute to sought-after early-'60s "brownface" amplifiers. Featuring as many authentic vintage components as Chelli could find, the "Brown-Out" delivers that rich, reedy "brown" tone—somewhere in between the crunchy tweed sound of earlier '50s designs and the clean tones of the mid-'60s. The Brown-Out packs plenty of clean headroom, but it breaks up when you want it to. And when it does shift into overdrive, it is smooth and not as raunchy as earlier '50s designs. Because the Brown-Out has a 12" speaker instead of the traditional 10", it also has tight, well-defined bass presence. Since the speaker is a genuine '61 Jensen P10Q with an alnico magnet, it also gives you the vintage-appropriate smooth compression you'll never get from a modern-day ceramic magnet. The soft bias-driven tremolo is one of the reasons "brownface" amps are so treasured, and Chelli's interpretation of this hypnotic effect is everything you could want it to be.
