Prunus caroliniana Prunus caroliniana, often lovingly called cherry laurel, is a delightful evergreen tree or sizable shrub that thrives in the low woods, fields, and thickets of the beautiful southeastern United States. Typically, it reaches a charming height of 15-20 feet, but it can grow up to an impressive 40 feet when it takes on its tree form. This lovely plant boasts glossy, lanceolate-oblong dark green leaves that range from 2 to 4 inches long, each with a friendly pointed tip. In late winter to early spring, it adorns itself with fragrant white flowers, each about 3/16 inch across, blooming in joyful dense racemes that measure 2-3 inches long. After the flowers, green fruits appear and gradually turn a lovely reddish-purple before ripening into shiny black delights in the fall. These fruits are a tasty treat for our feathered friends.
