Chickadees are one of the most familiar bird groups in America; the black-capped chickadee is the state bird of both Maine and Massachusetts. They are remarkable for their tolerance of cold winter temperatures and their impressive spatial memory of food caches. They are a cheerful sight in otherwise dormant winter landscapes, foraging in small flocks for seeds, berries, and insects. Their calls are especially iconic, and although most just think of the simple "chick-a-dee-dee-dee," their calls can be very complex and contain important information about food sources, predators, and flock movement.
