Cold Tolerant: Hardy and resilient, this chicory thrives in cooler temperatures, making it an excellent choice for early spring or fall planting. Growing Tips: Planting: Sow seeds directly in the garden in early spring or late summer. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and space them 6-8 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches apart. Once seedlings reach 2-3 inches in height, thin them to about 12 inches apart. Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates. Soil: Garnet Stem Catalogna Chicory grows best in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Aim for a soil pH between 5.5 and 6.8 for optimal growth. Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells. Chicory does not fare well in drought conditions, so regular watering is crucial. Fertilizing: Use a balanced, organic fertilizer at planting and every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to encourage healthy leaf and stem development. Harvesting Tips: When to Harvest: Harvest when the leaves and stems are young and tender, typically 40-60 days after planting. The best flavor is achieved when the stems are about 8-12 inches long. How to Harvest: Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the stems just above the base. You can harvest the entire plant or take individual leaves and stems, allowing the plant to continue growing. Storage: Store freshly harvested chicory in the refrigerator for up to a week. Wrap the leaves and stems in a damp paper towel and place them in a plastic bag to maintain freshness. Culinary Uses: Salads: Add Garnet Stem Catalogna’s vibrant stems and leaves to salads for a burst of color and a slight bitterness that balances well with sweet or creamy dressings. Sautéed Greens: Sauté the leaves and stems with garlic, olive oil, and a pinch of salt for a simple yet flavorful side dish.
