Overview Family: Cyprinidae Chilli Rasboras (Boraras brigittae) are one of the smallest and most striking freshwater aquarium fish, prized for their brilliant fiery red colouration and peaceful nature. Native to the blackwater peat swamps of Borneo, they thrive in densely planted aquariums with soft, acidic water and gentle water movement. Their tiny size and vibrant colour make them an outstanding choice for nano aquariums and heavily aquascaped planted tanks. Chilli Rasboras are highly social and should always be kept in groups, where they display their best colours and natural schooling behaviour. Recommended Tank Size: A minimum of 45 litres Peaceful nano schooling fish ideal for planted community aquariums Keep in groups of at least 10 or more for confidence, reduced stress and improved colouration Excellent tank mates include other small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, otocinclus and dwarf shrimp Avoid housing with larger or boisterous fish that may outcompete them for food Average Adult Size Body length: 1.5–2cm Reach adult size within approximately 4–6 months Typical lifespan: 4–6 years with excellent water quality and proper care Water Parameters For the best health and colouration, maintain stable, soft, acidic water: pH: 6.4–6.6 KH: 1–2 dKH GH: 2–3 dGH Temperature: 25–26°C Consistency is more important than chasing exact numbers, as sudden parameter changes can quickly stress this delicate species. Acclimation Drip acclimation is essential for Chilli Rasboras. Due to their sensitivity to changes in water chemistry, Chilli Rasboras should always be drip acclimated before being introduced to their new aquarium. A slow acclimation process helps minimise stress and greatly improves their chances of settling in successfully. Food Chilli Rasboras are micro-predators with very small mouths and require appropriately sized foods. Feed high-quality micro pellets or finely crushed premium flakes as a staple diet Supplement regularly with live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and microworms Feed 1–2 small meals daily, ensuring all food can be consumed within a few minutes A varied diet will enhance their vibrant red colouration and overall health
