This formula is a variant of Ding Chuan Tang (Ginkgo Nut & Apricot Seed Formula) that was first recorded by Wu Min in the 'Exquisite Formulas for Fostering Longevity (fu shou jing fang) in 1530. The addition of Aster tataricus (zi wan), Inula britannica (xuan fu hua), Citrus maxima (hua ju hong) have the combined actions of resolving Phlegm, redirecting the Lung Qi downward and alleviating cough and dyspnea, thus enhancing the formula's main actions in the treatment of acute stage asthma and bronchitis.A modified version of this formula has been used successfully to treat 30 cases of acute bronchitis in infants who were hospitalised with wheezing. The wheeze was resolved within three days in all patients, who were then discharged from hospital. A comparative group that was treated with Western medicine took an average of seven days before being well enough to be discharged from the hospital.It should be noted that patients should not be asked to abruptly discontinue their medical treatment (i.e. the use of puffers or inhalers), which they should continue to use as required. Over several weeks of treatment with this formula, it is expected that patients will experience a reduced need for their usual medications.
