A set of Japanese chisels, all sharpened and ready to use, plus a suede leather roll to keep them in. These are the same chisels that I sell individually and that are supplied in my tool sets – tried and tested and highly recommended as a great first set of Japanese chisels. The full set contains 6mm, 12mm, 18mm and 24mm sizes. If you already have a tool set from me, then you already have either the 18mm or the 24mm, so you can choose a set which does not include that size. These are laminated steel chisels – but what does that mean?! The chisel is made with two layers of steel forged together, so there is a thin super-hard lower layer and a softer iron-rich backing layer that gives more strength. Steel that is very hard will take a very keen edge and keep it for quite some time, but if the whole chisel was that hard it would probably shatter in use, so the soft backing layer absorbs shocks from being whacked with a mallet and other stresses like that. To make life easier, I will send the chisels to you already sharpened. I use Shapton waterstones and prep the edge with a slight secondary bevel to make it more resilient. In the first few sharpenings of a Japanese chisel it can be a bit delicate but settles down over time; a tiny microbevel just reduces the risk of you chipping the blade a bit. The fit and finish of these tools are excellent for the price and give you a nice way of trying out Japanese chisels without spending a fortune. They are made from SK5 high carbon steel, which while it isn't the highest grade of steel available is still more than good enough. Let's see those woodchips fly!
