Red yeast rice is a product of the yeast Monascus purpureus that is grown on rice and is a dietary staple in some Asian countries. Not only is it used as a food preservative, food color, and spice, but red yeast rice has been shown in various studies to reduce LDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Red yeast rice inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is the same enzyme acted upon by statin medications to help reduce the body’s manufacture of cholesterol.
