Chrysiptera starckii The Starkii Damselfish, also known as Starck’s Demoiselle, is a brilliantly colored reef fish with a deep blue body accented by a bold yellow stripe across the back and yellow caudal fin. Hardy and striking, they add a vibrant splash of color to marine aquariums. Growing to about 3 inches, they are larger than some other damsels but still a manageable size for most tanks. In the wild, Starkii Damselfish are found throughout the western Pacific, from Japan down to Australia and into Tonga, often inhabiting deeper reef slopes and rocky crevices. Their natural behavior is moderately territorial—though not as aggressive as some damselfish, they will defend their space, particularly in smaller tanks. A larger aquarium with plenty of live rock and hiding places helps minimize aggression. These fish are omnivores and readily accept a wide range of prepared foods, including flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, and brine shrimp, as well as some algae-based diets. They are considered reef safe and will not bother corals or most invertebrates, making them suitable for community reef setups when housed with equally robust tankmates. While they can be kept singly, Starkii Damselfish are best added with caution if keeping multiples, as pairing or group dynamics may lead to dominance disputes. With proper tank size and aquascaping, their brilliant coloration, hardiness, and active nature make them a rewarding choice for both intermediate and experienced aquarists.
