Cipolla is a fig with brown to deep purple skin. The skin can have white speckles that usually disappear upon ripening. Cipolla figs can often have a squat shape, but the length of the neck can also depend upon growing conditions. The figs have a red pulp that can drip red honey when ripe. The texture is jammy with a slight seed crunch. Cipolla has an exotic flavor that has been compared to Black Madeira. Some people taste hints of guava or papaya. Cipolla comes from Pomona Gardens, a conservatory of rare fruit trees under the care of Paolo Belloni. Belloni reportedly saved this variety from extinction by cloning Cipolla before its mother tree died. Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December): We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March. **All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees. Rooted Cuttings(Spring): We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span.
