Born in 1976(also my birth year), Circa emerged from a bold group of actors and theatre-makers who believed New Zealand stories deserved to be told with grit, honesty, and artistic freedom. Rejecting the grand, administration-heavy theatre models of the day, they built something leaner, braver, and fiercely collaborative; an actors’ theatre where performance came before spectacle. Its first home, a converted building on Harris Street, quickly became a crucible for original Kiwi work, helping launch playwrights, performers, and productions that would shape Aotearoa’s theatrical identity. In 1994, Circa found its permanent home on Wellington’s waterfront beside Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, where its intimate stages continue to host everything from razor-sharp comedy to deeply moving drama.
