Another splendid naval novel in the series starring Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. Aubrey, a lion in action but somewhat at sea on land, sails away from the hated Australian pris on colonies in his favourite vessel the Surprise. He soon realises he is out of touch with the mood of his ship. To his astonishment he finds he does not know what the foremost hands or even officers are thinking. They know, as he does not, that the Surprise has a stranger on board : but unknown to all the stranger is as potentially dangerous as a light in the powder magazione. A fierce battle onj a Pacific island follows. Good writing and fine story-telling. Pb. 350pp. Show more
