Address: 1035 22nd Ave, Suite 15, Oakland, CA 94606 THE CLASS This workshop will introduce students to using sashiko tools and techniques along with a variety of Japanese fabrics to create their own unique hand-stitched patchwork creation.This class is inspired by the traditional Japanese practice known as boro. It involves mending everyday household items and clothing by patching it with cloth and reinforcing it with a running stitch. Over time it would create an overlapping mosaic of fibers, usually in differing shades of indigo, and today has become more of a fashion statement than a necessity.Students will get to work closely with Mickey to create their own vision of patched together pieces with access to different needles, a wide range of colored threads, and our extensive selection of fabrics. No previous hand sewing knowledge is required and all student levels are welcome. All materials needed will be provided for this course, but students are encouraged to bring any of their own they would like to work with. THE INSTRUCTOR Mickey specializes in hand and machine sewing projects with a focus on sashiko. She is the second generation at Kimonomomo and has been surrounded by fiber arts her whole life. Her favorite projects include upcycling thrifted treasures, creating new stuffed friends, quilting and hand sewing.
