In their early years of service the Warships were rostered on the Penzance to Paddington to Bristol to Penzance diagram which allowed from the removal of steam on the difficult to operate line west of Newton Abbot. However with the introduction of the Westerns some of the Warships were used on the Waterloo to Exeter route and in their latter years they took over Paddington to Birmingham New Street and Paddington to Hereford duties.
