As a diesel hydraulic locomotive the Warships suffered the same fate as the Westerns and the Hymeks in that they were deemed non-standard by BR and sentenced to early withdrawal. T he last of the fleet to be built entered service in 1961 and the first to be withdrawn was in 1968, so the entire fleet of 38 locomotives only operated together for 7 years.
