Built between 1958 and 1961 the Class 42 Warships were one of the first mainline diesel locomotives to appear on the British Rail network. Replacing the old 'King' and 'Castle' cla ss steam locos a total of 38 were built at Swindon Works and allocated between Newton Abbot or Laira depots. All but two of the fleet were named after Royal Navy vessels, hence the name, and these were unique amongst named locomotives in that the class name could be found in small letters under the main name on the cast metal nameplate.
