A total of 512 Class 47's were built between 1962 and 1968 and they became the mainstay of the British Rail network in the '60s and '70s. It is one of the longest serving diesel el ectric locomotives with around 15% of the original fleet still in operation or preservation nearly 60 years later. North Star, one of those still running, has had four different numbers during its lifetime, 1661, 47077, 47613 and 47840, it remained in mainline service until 2007 and was then put into preservation by the West Somerset Railway.
