Compared to other locos built in the '60s I always thought the 50's, or 'Hoovers' as they were affectionately known, were the most modern looking with styling that was a world away from other English Electric locos such as the class 37's, 40's and Deltics. As these were the locomotives that were brought in to replace the Westerns I remember them not being that popular at the time but in later years they have developed a strong following with 18 of the original 50 still surviving in preservation.
