When first entering service in early 1964 D1003 sported a green livery along with distinctive red buffer beams and red backed number and nameplates, a colour combination that was o nly carried by seven of the class. The Westerns worked out of Paddington and their principle mainline services were to Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth and Penzance in the South West, either via Swindon and Bristol or Newbury and Westbury. Other routes included Cardiff and Swansea in South Wales and up to Banbury and Birmingham in the Midlands. They could also be seen on parcel and freight services and were regularly seen hauling china clay workings around the south west. Show more
