Designed by Sir Mischa Black and John Beresford-Evans at Swindon Works the Western is considered one of the most striking and elegant diesel locomotives to have been built in the U K. When the first of the fleet, D1000 Western Enterprise, entered service in December 1961 it was decided to paint it in an experimental desert sand colour and in those early days of diesel traction it must have been an unusual sight compared to the black and smokey steam locomotives that dominated the railways at the time. D1000 was the only member of the class painted in this colour which it carried for its first 3 years in service and it also had the distinction of being the only Western to carry the cast metal version of the British Rail Lion & Wheel logo.
