As a Cosmetology Teacher for the last 25 years, I found I have a passion for helping students pass their Cosmetology State Board Exam, particularly in the dreaded Science Areas. In Anatomy, we have to answer questions about the Skeletal System, the Muscular System, the Nervous System and of course the Circulatory System. In addition, it is important to understand the building blocks of these systems, which include the different types of cells, tissues, organs, etc. Woo! that’s a lot right there! Of particular concern when taking the exam, we have the diseases- of the skin, the nails and scalp and hair. It tends to get really confusing when going over these chapters. Who thought it was a good idea to have 98% of all nail diseases/disorders start with Ony? Well, that prefix is a clue to tell us that we are speaking about the nails. I do have to say, that the skin (derm) and the hair (trich), while still using the same technique, are not nearly as consistent with their names. While we are on the subject, and I am venting, why would you come up with two names for nerves and only change one letter, such as efferent and afferent? Well, I have a completely unconventional way to remember the difference, so just hang on. When I came up with these strange ways to remember things when taking the test, my students would laugh at my hints, BUT they passed their State Board Exams. That’s what’s important! As you work through this information, I sincerely hope you laugh or roll your eyes at my stories but most importantly PASS the exam!
