Cellerini has been making leather goods in a first-floor atelier on Via del Sole, in central Florence, since the late 1950s - bags, wallets, belts and the smaller leather pieces th at come off the same benches. This is one of those smaller pieces: a leather valet tray, the kind of thing that lives on a bedside table or a dresser and gathers what a pocket carries - keys, watch, a coin or two - at the end of the day. The exterior is fine-grained calfskin; the interior is lined with soft suede. Each of the four corners is held up by a gold-plated press stud, so the tray makes itself: the leather lies flat for storage or for travel, then snaps into shape on the surface where it is set down.
