The Clay Lake was created by extensive mining activity started in the 19th century. By 1933 the original hill had become a 168-metre deep pit. Remnants of the gold mining equipment have been left in the open for bypassers to observe. While originally man-made it has been affected by weather erosion for the past 80 years and that by itself created a unique landscape.
