Pond Canna Planting Directions Plant your Cleopatra Canna in moist, loam soil, in full sun, after all danger of frost has passed, with one inch of soil above the rhizome. Cleopatra Canna can also be planted in a container, using heavy loam soil and placed in your pond with up to 2 inches of water above the soil in the pot. Make sure the pots are large enough (at least a 12 inch wide by 12 inch deep container with holes) to protect plants from blowing over in heavy wind as the plants can grow quite tall! (We often recommend that you place heavy rocks at the bottom of a very large container before adding soil, to keep them upright in high winds.) Tender bulbs must be lifted after first frost, trim off old foliage, shake off any soil, rinse rhizomes and allow to dry outdoors, for a week or ten days, in an airy location. To overwinter, store in a dark, cool, dry location indoors and replant in the spring, after all danger of frost has passed.
