Kauai's Na Pali coast is one of those places where scale only makes sense from the water or the air. I was on the cliff side at sunrise, looking down at the ocean moving against the base of the pali while mist lifted from the valleys below. The light was gentle rather than dramatic, the kind that flattens contrast and lets texture speak.I waited for the clouds to open enough that the cliff face would catch a soft warmth without losing the cool blues in the shadowed folds. Coastal mornings in Hawaii can turn harsh quickly once the sun clears the horizon. This one stayed calm long enough for the frame to settle: rock, ocean, distance, and the sense that the island was still waking up. I remember the sound of the surf more than any technical detail. The photograph is really about that balance between solid stone and moving water.
