Key Characteristics of Clockwork Blueberries: Origin: The specific origins of each individual variety within the "Clockwork" series are proprietary, but they are generally bred to offer consistent production and fruit quality throughout a longer season than traditional blueberry cultivars. Patent Status: "Clockwork" is patented in the United States under US20130239264P1 which is held by Fall Creek Farm and Nursery Inc. until 2032-08-21. Berry Production: The berry characteristics within the "Clockwork" series can vary depending on the specific variety. However, they are generally selected for desirable traits such as good size, firmness, flavor, and shelf life to meet the demands of the commercial market and consumer preferences over an extended season. Ripening Time: The defining characteristic of the "Clockwork" series is its extended ripening window. Different varieties within the series are selected to mature at different times throughout the growing season, providing a more continuous supply of blueberries from a single planting or through a grower's overall portfolio of "Clockwork" varieties. Plant Size and Appearance: As a series encompassing multiple varieties, the plant size and appearance of "Clockwork" blueberries will vary. However, they are all cultivated Vaccinium species and will exhibit typical blueberry shrub characteristics, ranging in size and growth habit depending on the specific genetic makeup of each patented variety. Flowers: The flowering characteristics will also vary among the different patented varieties within the "Clockwork" series, but they will all produce the characteristic bell-shaped white or pinkish blueberry flowers in the spring, which are attractive to pollinators. Hardiness: The hardiness of the individual "Clockwork" blueberry varieties will depend on their specific genetic background and breeding objectives. Hortifrut likely selects and breeds varieties suitable for the regions where they are intended to be grown commercially. Therefore, hardiness ratings would need to be specified for each individual patented "Clockwork" variety. Pollination: Pollination requirements can vary among blueberry cultivars. While some blueberries are partially self-fertile, cross-pollination with another compatible variety often leads to better fruit set and larger berries. The specific pollination needs of each patented "Clockwork" variety would be determined by its genetic makeup. Growing Conditions: The optimal growing conditions for "Clockwork" blueberries will depend on the specific variety within the series. However, in general, blueberries thrive in full sun, well-drained acidic soil rich in organic matter, and require consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Uses: The blueberries produced by the "Clockwork" series are primarily intended for the commercial fresh fruit market due to their extended availability and desirable fruit quality traits. They are suitable for fresh consumption, inclusion in various food products, and retail sale. Wildlife Value: Like other blueberry varieties, the flowers of "Clockwork" blueberries will attract pollinators, and the berries will be a food source for birds and other wildlife. Ornamental Value: Depending on the specific variety's growth habit and foliage characteristics, "Clockwork" blueberries may offer some ornamental value, particularly with their spring flowers and potential for fall foliage color. Disease and Pest Resistance: Hortifrut likely selects and breeds "Clockwork" varieties with good disease and pest resistance relevant to the regions where they are commercially grown. However, specific resistance profiles would vary among the patented varieties.
