Cloud Studies by Josephus Augustus Knip is almost all sky, painted in soft grey and pale blue with nothing below to break it up. Heavy, dark clouds pile up on the left, while lighter, whiter ones drift across the middle and right, thinner and more scattered. A second, smaller band of clouds sits low near the bottom, almost hovering on its own beneath everything above it. Knip works with just a few tones here, letting the bare paper stand in for the brightest light in the sky. Josephus Augustus Knip (1777–1847) was a Dutch landscape painter who studied in Paris and later spent years in Italy on a royal scholarship, filling sketchbooks with studies made straight from life. He leaned on these sketches for the rest of his career, using them as the backbone for his larger, finished landscapes.
