Rather than treating it simply as foreground for another sunrise photograph, I wanted that colour to become an important part of the image. Then the ocean provided the missing piece. An incoming wave began to build offshore and, as light passed through it, the face of the wave turned a beautiful translucent green. Suddenly the foreground and ocean were speaking the same visual language. I waited for the wave to stretch across the composition before making the photograph. For a fraction of a second, the greens of the rock platform, tidal pools and Pacific Ocean all came together. Why It Matters We often associate coastal photography with blue. Blue skies. Blue water.
