The rooster/ chicken, (Gallup’s gallus domesticus), is a domestic subspecies of the red jungle fo wl, a member of the pheasant family that is native to Asia. This rooster was probably first domesticated for cockfights, not as food. This sport, in fact, may be responsible for creating the bird that today is the worlds single most important source of protein. In the Hawaiian islands chickens have not just crossed the road, but have caused a virtual chicken explosion. Today its common to see roosters roaming bout the town and countryside. Many of the kauai chickens are descendants of birds that escaped during Hurricanes Iwa in 1982 and Iniki in 1992. Show more
