FM mode cuts the background hiss and engine noise that AM picks up, which matters most in the exact situations this radio is built for — convoy runs, job sites, campground nets and trail groups where everyone is within a few miles of each other. AM is still there for the long-haul reach and for talking to the huge installed base of AM-only radios still on the road, so you lose nothing by moving up.
