Cochemiea maritima seeds grow into the coastal cochemiea — a clustering, cylindrical cactus native to the desert and dry shrubland biome of western central Baja California, Mexico, growing on calcareous rocks on Pacific coastal slopes. The genus Cochemiea is derived from the indigenous Cochimí name for the Baja California peninsula. The epithet maritima means 'seaside' or 'coastal' (from Latin marinus), referring to the coastal Pacific habitat. Produces blue-green, upright stems to 50 cm in large clusters to 1 m across; 10–15 white radial spines; 4 hooked, reddish-brown central spines to 5 cm; scarlet-red zygomorphic tubular flowers to 3 cm; red spherical fruits.
