Cochin chickens date back to the late 1800s. These large, Asiatic breed originated in China and was called the Shanghai. Over the years, Cochins have been highly prized for exhibit ion. Cochins are good layers, extremely likely to set, and have an excellent disposition. Cochins are a good choice for families with backyard flocks. Black Cochin chickens are a beautiful coal-black color. Cochins are heavily feathered from tip to toe. Their fluffy, downy feathers give them a massive and bulky appearance. The Blue Cochin is stately, gentle, and is very rare. These bluish-slate birds with bright red combs are excellent for showing. THE COLOR BLUE: A unique genetic feature of this breed is the constant recurrence in the offspring of not only all blue chicks, but also the black, white, and black-white colors used in the original matings many generations ago to produce these blue birds. All of these chicks carry the blue genes and when mated black on white or with other blues in turn produce many blue offspring. In our breeding flocks, however, only blue males of the finest color are used. Approximately 50% of the baby chicks will be all blue. The other 50% will be black, white, and black/white combinations. Buff Cochin chickens are a massive Asiatic breed covered with an extraordinary abundance of soft, fluffy, golden buff feathers from tip to toe. Cochins were introduced from China in the mid-1800s as Shanghais, and they created a sensation wherever shown. Today this breed is still a beautiful show bird and highly prized for exhibition. The Buff Cochin is one of our family favorites. These large, feather-footed birds have an excellent disposition making them a good choice for a backyard flock or urban setting, and they weather the cold well. Cochin hens are ok brown egg layers, and good setters. The White Cochin is one of the old Cochin varieties. These are like giant "snowballs", with masses of soft, white, downy plumage. They are beautiful birds of quiet disposition and outstanding for exhibition. Partridge Cochin chickens are a gorgeously colored variety with typical Partridge coloring. Males have reddish-orange hackle and saddle feathers with black centers. Females have a typical Partridge pattern with dark reddish brown feathers penciled in black. The Silver Laced Cochin is a one of our more rare varieties of Cochins. Often kept for exhibition, they are a silver-white bird with black lacing on each feather — similar to the Silver Laced Wyandotte. Show more
