Colemanite is a natural source of boron commonly used as a flux to lower the melting point of glazes and clay bodies. It enhances glaze fluidity, promoting smooth, glossy surfaces while improving adhesion and durability. As a boron-rich material, colemanite helps develop bright, well-melted glazes at mid-range and high-fire temperatures. However, due to its tendency to release gases during firing, it is often replaced by more refined boron compounds such as frits to ensure stability and reduce defects such as pinholing or bubbling.
