Instead of a coiled external shell like ammonites, belemnites had an internal shell or 'guard', which is usually what we find as a fossil. This guard was elongated and bullet-shaped, providing a counterbalance to the animal's body. One of the fascinating aspects of belemnites is their fossilized 'guards' have been found in vast numbers, leading to the term 'belemnite battlefields'. This suggests that these creatures may have lived in large colonies and possibly engaged in group spawning events.
