It inhabits waters off the coasts of Australia, Tas mania, and New Zealand, at depths ranging from 600 to 1,200 meters (2,000 to 3,900 feet). At such depths, the extreme pressure helps maintain the fish's structure. However, when brought to the surface, the drastic reduction in pressure causes the blobfish to ""deflate"" and appear soft and saggy, giving it its distinctive blob-like appearance.
